"Beyond the General: Decolonization, Culture, and Race in the Canada-Quebec-France Triangle, 1944-1970"
Speaker: Dr. David Meren, Assistant Professor, Université de Montréal
One of the most enduring images of 1960s Quebec is Charles de Gaulle shouting "Vive le Québec libre!" from the balcony of Montreal City Hall. Moving beyond the polarizing figure of de Gaulle and his 'cri du balcon', this talk will explore how the interwoven questions of decolonization, culture, and race informed the emergence and evolution of a complex triangular dynamic between France, Quebec, and Canada in the quarter-century after the Second World War.
