  • Saving Nature in a Post-Wild World
    February 10, 2012 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Sponsored by: Department of Philosophy and Department of Biology
How should we conserve nature? How should we think about nature? Acclaimed science journalist Emma Marris has answers, and hope.

Returned from her travels and researches for the journal Nature and her book Rambunctious Garden, Marris enlivens environmentalism and conservation movements with a challenge. Stop aiming to save a fictional pristine wilderness. Aim instead to save the wondrous relationships we do have with the natural world. This optimistic talk introduces you to leading scientists and environmentalists, imaginary Edens, designer ecosystems, and Pleistocene parks. Marris also describes innovative conservation approaches, including rewilding, assisted migration, and the embrace of novel-ecosystems. All are invited to this free event, sponsored by the various offices listed below.

  • Vernissage - Fanciful: Small Media Moments
    February 09, 2012 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Sponsored by: Media Gallery in the Department of Communication Studies
The Media Gallery in the Department of Communication Studies proudly presents the exhibition Fanciful: Small Media Moments, curated by Kim Sawchuk and Rae Staseson.

Featuring the work of Margaret Murphy, Emily Pelstring, Kelly Thompson and Karen Trask, this exhibition plays with our notion of scale and challenges us to reconsider intimacy, domestic display and the role of whimsy in communication. The artists all use a combination of old technologies in conjunction with new media, in highly unique ways, to create surprising connections.

Fanciful: Small Media Moments runs from February 10th until April 13th, in the Media Gallery, CJ Building. Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday 9-4:45 pm and Friday 9-12:45 pm.
